Two former employees of American Samoa's Treasury Department who collected more than 53,000 US dollars in bogus tax refund cheques have been ordered to pay full restitution.

The Samoa News reports that Tina Peleti and Rose Fao were ordered by the High Court to pay the restitution.

The two were convicted of creating more than 60 bogus tax refund cheques last year under the Additional Child Tax Credit, which is funded by the U.S. government.

The deputy attorney general, Frederick O'Brien, told the court if the territorial government didn't act quickly in handling the case, the U.S. Justice Department would have stepped in.
