8:31 am on 25 March 2008

The Solomon Islands Minister for Mines and Energy, Edward Hunuehu has taken the front seat in the election campaigns for his wife, Helen.

Helen Hunuehu is contesting the constituency seat vacated by former Prime Minister Bartholomew Ulufa'alu when he died after a long illness.

Mr Hunuehu and his wife were in the media spotlight last week when the public was outraged at his decision to appoint his wife to the electricity and water authority boards.

He eventually withdrew her appointment but defended his actions in parliament saying boards in the country needed more women.

Mr Hunuehu is in the Malaitan Capital, Auki campaigning for his wife by holding public talks in market areas.

The two bye elections for East Malaita and Aoke Langa Langa will be held on Wednesday.
