Greenpeace calls for more consultation over major new road in Indonesia's Papua

The environmental group Greenpeace has called for more consultation over government plans for a 400-kilometre highway in Indonesia's Papua region.

Jakarta is looking at clearing an estimated 800,000 hectares of forested land to make way for the trans-Papuan highway.

The highway is a key feature of a government drive to improve infrastructure in the remote provinces of Papua and West Papua under a Presidential decree for development acceleration .

However Greenpeace spokesman in Indonesia, Bustar Maitar, is concerned that the developments are being pushed through too quickly.

He says that Jakarta must consult and discuss the highway plan first with key stakeholders.

"We're not saying Papua has no need for development, but that local governmentand the civil society and the community really really need to sit down and discuss about that plan."
