Palau president stuck in Philippines over airline security issue

4:25 pm on 3 April 2008

The President of Palau has been left stranded in the Philippines on a state visit after he refused to be frisked before boarding a Continental Airlines flight.

The airline had insisted that Tommy Remengesau be patted down before boarding the commercial flight to Palau.

But the Palau ambassador in Manila, Ramon Rechebei, says they decided that he should not go through.

Palau is to make a formal complaint about Continental through diplomatic channels.

Continental is the only airline that flies directly to Palau from Manila.
