A Samoan boxer who won a gold medal in last year's South Pacific Games, Fa'asala Toi Livai, has been charged with the alleged rape of a young girl in February.

Our correspondent says the accused was arrested on March 27th but then released on bail.

This followed a request from his defense lawyer to allow the accused to attend training for the Olympic's qualifying rounds in boxing later this month.

According to police, another boxer has been charged separately relating to the same case.
