The United Nations Development Programme, or UNDP, says it will have double the resources over the next three years to help Pacific countries achieve the Millennium Development Goals.

The Pacific representative of the UNDP, Richard Dictus, says core funding will rise to 10 million US over the 2008/2010 period, up from 4.5 million.

He says this is complemented by various UN trust funds and agreements with bilateral partners taking their total available finance to 61 million dollars through to 2012.

Mr Dictus says the Pacific is in danger of missing out on achieving some of the goals, which include eradicating poverty and hunger, reversing the spread of HIV/AIDS and achieving gender equality.

He says one country that will receive high priority is Solomon Islands where the UNDP has recently increased its presence with the assignment of a Deputy Resident Representative.

Mr Dictus says Solomon Islands will need considerable assistance to achieve the goals by 2015.
