PNG Governor accuses central government of trying to unseat him

7:58 am on 11 April 2008

The Governor of the Papua New Guinea National Capital District, Powes Parkop, says the Government is making moves to remove him and retain the appointing powers.

The Post Courier newspaper reports Mr Parkop as saying this is part of planned amendments to the National Capital District Commission Act.

Mr Parkop in an open letter says he knows the changes are being made because of his lack of support for the present Government, but he says he made his decision based on the wishes of the people of NCD and on principles.

He says the same Government made amendments in late 2006 for its own convenience when their own party man was in the Governor's seat.
