Tonga PM distances himself from action of TBC board he leads

1:47 pm on 11 April 2008

The Prime Minister of Tonga, Feleti Sevele, denies that any restrictions have been placed on public broadcast journalists leading into the election on April the 24th.

This follows the Tonga Broadcasting Commission removing its staff from presenting any political programmes.

Instead, such programmes are to be vetted by a committee of management and the TBC Board.

Dr Sevele heads the Board but says he has had no hand in the move.

"This is a decision at the management level, I don't get involved in that. I don't want to be involved in that decision. What I have been told is this is a management decision, and therefore I would not want to interfere in those decisions."

Feleti Sevele, the Prime Minister of Tonga.

The election will be for nine of the assembly's 30 members.
