Vanuatu-based West Papua Representative Office welcomes govt decision

9:25 am on 12 April 2008

The Vanuatu-based West Papua Representative Office has welcomed the recent provision of a passport by the government to WPRO spokesman Andy Ayamiseba.

Despite having been based in Vanuatu as a West Papuan activist for twenty years, Mr Ayamiseba's deportation from the country was ordered last year by the then Internal Affairs Minister George Wells.

The official reason for the deportation order, which never transpired, was that the activist was interfering in local politics.

Mr Wells' recent decision as the current Foreign Minister to grant Mr Ayamiesba a passport coincides with this week's major meeting of the West Papua National Coalition of Liberation in Port Vila.

Mr Wells' first political advisor Jonas Cullwick says the problem has now been sorted out.

"That matter's now been sorted out on a personal level and on a professional as well and his sympathetic position on a personal and political level is still there for the West papuan cause and also as a representative of the government of Vanuatu."
