Government in French Polynesia set to fall

10:09 am on 16 April 2008

The French Polynesian assembly is set to approve a motion of no confidence which will oust the seven-week old government of Gaston Flosse.

The session opened a short time ago with 29 opposition members present which is enough to pass the motion that will install Gaston Tong Sang as the next president.

The government side is boycotting the sitting after losing two members, Michel Yip and Justine Teura, to the To Tatou Aia opposition coalition.

The opposition accused Mr Flosse of public perjury for siding with the Union For Democracy after the early general election in February.

If the government falls as expected it will be the second time Mr Tong Sang has won the presidency.
