PNG MP claims Chinese company uses illegal migrants in nickel project

A Papua New Guinea MP claims that illegal Chinese immigrants are entering the country in large numbers in shipping containers bound for the huge Ramu nickel mine.

Ramu is run by a Chinese government company.

The Post Courier newspaper reports that the MP, Niuro Toko Sapia, has told Parliament that ships from China carrying equipment for the Ramu nickel mine allegedly off-load illegal immigrants in large shipping containers.

He says these illegal migrants are pushing local people out of employment opportunities at the mine.

Mr Sapia says the influx of the Chinese represents the failure of government departments to execute their duties.
