Broke CNMI government drops power subsidy

3:45 pm on 17 April 2008

The Governor of the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas, Benigno Fitial, says the administration is broke and can no longer subsidise the fuel purchases of the Commonwealth Utilities Corporation.

The CUC announced earlier that it will run out of fuel tomorrow.

The governor has told the Marianas Variety that the CUC should consider raising its power rates and cutting costs.

He says the government is faced with its own money problems.

Governor Fitial says the administration and some agencies have already made advance payments to the CUC but that cannot be sustained.
