Outcry in French Polynesia over alleged racist remarks

1:15 pm on 21 April 2008

There has been an outcry in French Polynesia over comments by a unionist that are seen to be racist.

Employers are set to take legal action after a union leader said that being governed by an Asian is frightening.

The comment was made after Gaston Tong Sang, whose family arrived from China more than a century ago, was elected president for a second time.

The Human Rights League and the French high commission have also spoken out against the unionist's remarks.

The high commissioner says the Polynesian multicultural model is exemplary.
