Tongan official says nobles want to be more active in Parliament

8:14 am on 23 April 2008

The first stage of the election in Tonga begins today when 33 nobles cast their votes to elect nine representatives to the country's 30 seat parliament

Most voters in Tonga go to the polls tomorrow.

The Secretary of the Tongan Culture and Tradition Committee, Albert Vaea, says members of the country's nobility are recognising the importance of an active role in parliament.

"Over the last month or maybe more than that, the nobility have actually gone through and talked over that there needs to be a more active role within nobility as in Parliament."

Albert Vaea says the number of candidates standing as people's representatives is exciting and it's important all those eligible to vote do so tomorrow.
