Treasury official in American Samoa resigns accusing Treasurer of removing controls

10:32 am on 28 April 2008

The comptroller for the American Samoa Government Treasury, Brian Mix has resigned five months before the end of his two year contract.

Mr Mix handed his resignation to the Treasurer Gaea Perefoti Failautusi and has already returned to the mainland.

In his resignation letter, he says the reason he is leaving is because the Treasurer has subverted or overturned controls which were put in place by the previous Treasurer to operate the Office of the Treasury.

Gaea has been serving as Treasurer since January.

Mr Mix accused Gaea of being an impediment to sound controls in Treasury and the government in general.
