Hundreds of people on New Caledonia's island of Ouvea have commemorated the 20th anniversary of the fatal hostage drama on island.
19 Kanaks and two members of the French security forces were killed when a cave was stormed in a bid to free 23 hostages held by Kanak separatists.
The crowd was told not to forget that 19 fighters whom everybody owes the peace enjoyed now.
The Ouvea violence was followed by top-level talks between the territory's rival camps and culminated a few weeks in the Matignon Accords.
