Solomon Islands has been tackling its trade situation with the launching of the Diagnostic Trade and Integration Study yesterday.

It is being seen as the first step in a plan to address the nation's weaknesses in the trade sector and related areas.

Dr David Luke, who is involved in the study, says the government will need to take a lead role.

"So this programme is meant to support countries to overcome these supply constraints as we say, to overcome capacity problems that they apparently have so that's the origin of the programme."

Dr Luke said the real work would start after the survey was completed.
