Solomons opposition critical of Moti extradition in light of Whiteside case

The Solomon Islands opposition leader, Manasseh Sogavare, has reiterated that the government had acted unlawfully in the way it deported a former attorney general, Julian Moti, to Australia.

Mr Moti, who is an Australian citizen, was extradited in December to face child sex charges dating back to the 1990s.

Mr Sogavare has highlighted the issue after the recent High Court order prohibiting immediate action on a deportation order served on the Managing Director of Russell Islands Plantations Estate Limited, John Whiteside.

Mr Sogavare has told the Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation that he was accused of interfering with the judiciary when he wanted to uphold the principle of fairness and impartiality in the case of Mr Moti.

He says the law enforcement authorities forced Mr Moti to leave the country in haste without the chance of a legal challenge to the order.
