Tonga has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Fiji's interim Government to improve air services between the two countries.
Fiji and Tonga have updated an MOU that was first signed in 1999 to significantly increase seat capacity on designated national carriers from 350 seats to 1000 seats per week.
Tonga's minister of Transport, Paul Karalus, says national carriers can now access Nausori and Nadi in Fiji, and Fiji carriers can access Fuamotu, Tongatapu and Vava'u.
He says there are other benefits too.
"There is also a third aspect to this Memorandum of Understanding, and that is that there are new freedom rights granted so that Tongan carriers can proceed from Tonga through Nadi to any point in Australia and Fiji carriers can proceed from Nadi through Tonga to any point in New Zealand."
Paul Karalus says with the demise of Tonga's national carrier in 2005, the main carrier between Tonga and Fiji has been Fiji's Air Pacific.
