The Cook Islands Police say they are concerned about law and order on the northern island of Manihiki and are sending additional officers there later today.
The police patrol boat, Te Kukupa, is being sent after Cabinet was asked for about 300,000 US dollars to cover fuel costs.
The Police Commissioner, Patrick Tasker, says the actions of a few and the ongoing concerns of the officers already on Manihiki led to a decision to provide additional law and order support.
The police contingent's main brief is ensure there is a strong presence of law and order and to ensure the airport is safe.
A court official will also travel with Te Kukupa in case of legal matters arising during the deployment.
