American Samoa cannery wins one year tax exemption

American Samoa Governor, Togiola Tulafono, has signed a one year tax exemption certificate for the Star Kist Samoa cannery.

The cannery's exemption agreement expired on April 30th and the cannery sought a special one year exemption.

The approved tax rate would have the cannery pay corporate taxes of about $1 million every quarter.

Star Kist Vice President Barry Mills says the company still plans to lay off 100 people at the end of the month.

The lay offs are to offset increased labor costs when the next 50 cent increase in the minimum wage kicks in on May 25th.
