French Polynesia President flies to Paris to sign development contract

10:11 am on 19 May 2008

The French Polynesian president, Gaston Tong Sang, has flown to Paris for this week's meetings with the French prime minister, Francois Fillon, and President Nicolas Sarkozy.

Mr Tong Sang is expected to sign a development contract worth 680 million US dollars with the French goverment.

Walter Zweifel reports

"Mr Tong Sang has headed to Paris although the territorial assembly is yet to vote on the plan as political infighting and procedural queries have delayed a formal vote in Tahiti until tomorrow. While his To Tatou Aia coalition is confident it will get the minimum 29 votes needed to endorse the plan, its assembly leader Jean Christophe Bouissou says what matters is that 29 members put their signatures on the draft document. This week's signing ceremony comes after eight months of delays brought about by three changes of government."
