Calls in Solomon Islands for national reconciliation to be deferred

There are calls for a national reconciliation in Solomon Islands planned for July to be put back until issues of land are sorted out.

The Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation reports a Guadalcanal leader, Gordon Billy Gatu, saying before the reconcilation the government must set up the Commission of Inquiry into land dealings and lost property on Guadalcanal.

He says a Truth and Reconciliation Commission report on the unrest needs to be completed beforehand.

Mr Gatu says the land issue has to be ironed out by the Commission before Guadalcanal and Malaita can reconcile.

Meanwhile, the SIBC reports the Malaita Maasina Forum has expressed similar sentiments with general secretary, William Gua, saying unless outstanding issues are dealt with, there will never be a meaningful reconciliation.
