The latest round of wage rises to bring pay in American Pacific territories' in line with the mainland takes effect from today.

In the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas, the minimum wage will increase by fifty cents bringing the new minimum wage to 4 dollars 05 an hour.

The Department of Labour says some employees in the CNMI won't be covered by the minimum wage provisions and may continue to be paid at the rate set by the current legislation

If an employer is a small business, and staff don't engage in commerce, then the minimum wage law won't apply.

Fishermen, some farmers and some domestic workers also won't be covered by the wage rise.
