Greenpeace confronts Spanish vessel in Kiribati waters

5:56 pm on 27 May 2008

Environmental activists with the organisation Greenpeace have confronted the Spanish owned Albatun Tres - a tuna fishing vessel dubbed a super super seiner because of its size and the efficient way it is netting albacore tuna.

Greenpeace's Lagi Toribau, who is aboard the NGO's ship the Esperanza, says they confronted the Albatun Tres in Kiribati waters near the Phoenix island group.

"She was just in the process of taking her net back into the ship when our activists deployed a 25-metre floating banner reading our key message of No Fish No Future into the net in our attempt to prevent her from actually taking tuna in."
