Another step has been made in New Caledonia towards the listing of its coral reefs under UNESCO.

New Caledonia is surrounded by reefs and now its applying for world heritage status for six of its reefs.

Our correspondent, Claudine Wery, reports.

"Last weekend the experts of the International Union for Nature and Conservation gave the green light to the application of France to this listing. This means that the experts consider the coral reef valuable enough to be presented to the World Heritage Committee."

Claudine Wery says UNESCO will decide if the New Caledonian reefs will be listed at its meeting in July.
