Solomon Islands Minister for Fisheries and Marine Resource Development says new rules of engagement governing bilateral fisheries agreements will take effect from 17 June.

Nollen Leni says the new measures from the Forum Fisheries Agency, will better control and monitor the operations of fishing vessels licensed to fish within the country's exclusive economic zone.

These measures he says are geared to ensure respective pacific nations get the best benefit out of their fishery resources such as tuna.

Mr Leni told the Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation that the new agreement was an improvement on the Nauru Agreement whose signatories represent eight Pacific nations whose waters hold the world's largest stock of tuna species.
