The Taiwanese government is funding a Solomon Islands population and housing census for next year.

The Taiwanese Ambassador to Solomon Islands, George Chan, handed Solomon's Prime Minister Derek Sikua the more than 470,000 US dollar aid package for the project.

Dr Sikua said the money would aid the National Population and Housing Census - the first census since 1999.

He said the project will help improve economic development and progress, especially in rural areas.

Solomon Islands is one of six South Pacific countries that diplomatically recognise Taiwan over China.
