Niue planning to use Forum summit to push for greater commitment to climate change

Niue wants Pacific countries to think about what they can do to combat climate change during this year's Pacific Islands Forum leaders summit on the island.

The caretaker Premier, Young Vivian, says the island countries have long demanded changes from the developed nations but he says they too need to make an effort.

Niue will be showcasing what it is trying to do, such as making the fitting of solar power units mandatory in new housing.

Mr Vivian says he hopes other Pacific countries will make similar substantial commitments.

"I think we need to think about what we ourselves can do. We have been yelling at big developed countries to, hey, take control, think about us, but what can we really do ourselves to help with this major problem."
