PNG workers may receive a pay rise

Workers in Papua New Guinea who have been waiting anxiously to see their wages increase to match the rising cost of living are likely to receive good news shortly.

A senior government minister has indicated the National Executive Council recently approved a submission by Public Service Minister, Peter O'Neill, for the minimum wage to be increased.

The minister, who did not want to be named, said his colleagues felt they had no option but to vote in favour of the submission because of the fact most Papua New Guineans continued to receive low wages as prices shot up.

While he could not confirm by how much the minimum wage rate is set to increase, he indicated that the Government may soon make an announcement.
