There is a call for Pacific countries and donors to reverse the declining investment in the agricultural sector in the face of volatile global food prices.
The Secretariat of the Pacific Community or SPC told the UN Food Summit in Rome that an increased production of traditional staples such as taro, cassava, breadfruit and yams could help limit the impact of rising food prices for some Pacific countries.
The SPC's, Dr Mary Taylor, says some countries need to become more self reliant in their own food production.
She says in order for that to work, countries will need to place more importance on the agriculture sector and receive support.
"From the government sector, the private sector, us , from regional agencies, like SPC, you know supporting the national capacity to increase the production levels"
Dr Taylor says there are already number of countries in the region encouraging their locals to grow their own food.
