The United States House of Representatives has passed a bill which extends for one year federal tax credits for the two tuna canneries in American Samoa, Star Kist Samoa and Samoa Packing.

The tax credits expired on December 31, 2007.

American Samoa's Congressman, Faleomavaega Eni Hunkin, says the tax credits are worth millions of dollars to the two canneries.

The US Senate has yet to approve the extension which is included in the Renewable Energy and Job Creation Act of 2008.

The tuna canneries employ more than 4,000 workers between them.
