Large Polynesian art exhibition opens in Paris

10:30 am on 17 June 2008

A large Polynesian art exhibition opens in Paris later today after a well-received showing in London.

The Musee de Quai Branly is putting on display, artefacts from the 2006 Power and Taboo exhibition at the British Museum in London.

It concentrates on the period 1760-1860; during the first sustained contact between Polynesians and European explorers, missionaries and colonisers.

Among the pieces on show is a greenstone pendant offered by a Hawaiian chief to a member of Captain Cook's last expedition.
