Environmentalists in New Caledonia say they are still in talks with Goro Nickel over a waste pipeline .
They want to stop the multi-billion US dollar project for environmental reasons, saying the effluent from the nickel plant will contaminate the lagoon earmarked for UNESCO World Heritage status.
Work on the pipeline has been suspended since February.
An environmental activist, Mike Hosken, says the project is still on hold and there's still strong resistance from people in the Isle of Pines and on Ouen.
Mr Hosken says the activist group, Rheebu Nuu, which is also opposed to the current project, is asking for stricter financial controls and more participation.
He says the area in the south of New Caledonia's main island should be turned into a reserve pending a decision by UNESCO in July.
