The veteran leader of the New Caledonian branch of the National Front, Guy George, has quit the French right-wing movement.

In an open letter published by Noumea's daily newspaper, he has lashed out at his rivals within the party and says he will now work for a French Caledonia.

Mr George says he will try to rally loyalists to to show that the territory wishes to remain with France permanently.

His letter was dispatched from Serbia where he is recovering from an operation.
