The Solomon Islands High Court Registrar says the first female judge appointed to the bench is a role model for aspiring female lawyers and women.

Justice Nkemdilim Amelia Izuako, who is Nigerian, has been appointed for a renewable two-year term.

She was appointed by the Governor General on June the 4th, with her position being funded by the Commonwealth Secretariat.

The Solomon Islands High Court Registrar Nelson Laurere says it's good to have a woman join the judiciary.

"As far as [us] in the judiciary we are really happy that she is here. I think she will be in a position to add to the growing jurisdiction of jurisprudence, and I think its an opportunity for female lawyers in this jurisdiction, newly graduated, maybe few are already experienced to give them some competence in trying to make it to the bench as well."
