Solomon Islands increases officers in rapid response team

10:55 am on 23 June 2008

The Solomon Islands Police Force Acting Commissioner, Peter Marshall ,says they have increased the number of officers in the Police Rapid Response Team.

Mr Marshall says this follows comments from the Commission of Inquiry into the April riots in 2006 that the police were perhaps not ready and able to respond to incidents of disorder.

The Acting Commissioner says the number of officers in the team is now 30, an increase from the previous number of eleven.

He told the Solomon Island Broadcasting Corporation that these officers have access to sets of riot equipment owned by the SIPF.
