The teachers training college on the island of Rarotonga in the Cook Islands is to close temporarily.

The college, which has been briefly closed four times over the years, is producing a surplus of primary school teachers while the population is declining.

The Prime Minister, Jim Marurai, who is a former teacher, says the quality of education will not be suffer because of the closure.

He also says to continue training teachers is a waste of good resources.

"We can't keep on training without using those graduates from the school, so its really a case of being aware that can't put too many teachers into one classroom."

Jim Marurai says it could be three years before the college is reopened, but it is hard to be sure at this stage.
