The government of Samoa has been urged not to privatise the telecommunciations company, Samoatel.

The call comes from senior MP and former Opposition Leader, Le Mamea Ropati, as the corporation is in line for privatisation.

The Talamua online news service reports that Le Mamea has told Parliament that Samoatel should be kept as a state entity because telecommunications is a lucrative business.

He also has concerns that the corporation may end up in foreign ownership.

However, the CEO for the Ministry of Finance and Treasury, Hinauri Petana says the ministry is preparing to privatise Samoatel and is already auditing assets and surveying options.
