10:05 am on 15 July 2008

American Samoa chief justice Michael Kruse has ordered the government to issue subpoenas to officials of the Department of Public Safety to appear

before the High Court.

The Samoa News reports today that the chief justice wants Public Safety officials to explain the status of the Residential Substance Abuse Treatment, OR RSAT grant, which comes from the U.S. Department of Justice.

The newspaper says that Kruse was told by the Probation Office about the RSAT grant available for correction and detention facilities for states and

territories.

Kruse raised the issue last Friday during a case involving a woman with an apparent drug problem.

He says he wants to know the status of the this funding for American Samoa.

The U.S. Justice Department records shows that between fiscal years 2005 and 2007, American Samoa received more than 211,000 US dollars under the RSAT grant.
