US calls on Fiji regime to hold election as promised

The US state department has called on Fiji to hold elections by March as promised last year.

In a statement today, it says an admission from Fiji's self-appointed prime minister Frank Bainimarama that elections due next year will not go ahead is to go back on a clear promise made last year.

It says since making that commitment, the interim government has looked for ways to slow progress towards elections.

Commodore Bainimarama says the electionwon't go ahead on schedule because there is not enough time to change Fiji's electoral system, which he says is racist.

The statement says the US believes that Fiji is fully capable of organising and holding a national election.
