Former Forum Secretary General says Pacific Plan and regional co-operation critical

6:33 pm on 23 July 2008

The former Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum, Greg Urwin, says the establishment of the Pacific Plan and rationalising of regional agencies is critical for the region.

Mr Urwin resigned the post earlier this year on health grounds, but conveyed his feelings through a letter to the Forum Officials Committee which is currently meeting in Suva.

He says much of his involvement in the Pacific over the past 30 or more years has been rewarding, but more recently there had been a little less of that joyous quality which the work seemed to once possess.

Mr Urwin says the establishment of the very broad range of activities the Pacific Plan encompasses is critical, along with the setting up of the Regional Institutional Framework.

He says it is critical that regional organizations do not pull against each other, something he says continues to happen.
