Two CNMI garment factories to close

3:21 pm on 25 July 2008

Two major garment factories in the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas will close within the next few months.

A CNMI Department of Labor official has confirmed that the United International Corporation and Onwel Garment Manufacturers, will soon shut their doors.

Labour Director, Barry Hirshbein says the department was informed of the closures earlier this week.

He says Onwel's factory will shut down on August 21st, but managers plan to pay workers for 60-days worth of work.

UIC's notice says it will close by Sept. 21st but stops short of detailing any plans for paying workers.

The two factories employ several hundred foreign and local workers.
