1:51 pm on 30 July 2008

Schools and businesses across Vanuatu are closed today as the country celebrates its 28th National Day.

It marks the day in 1980 when Vanuatu gained its independence from Britain and France and our correspondent says for this reason it is very important for ni-Vanuatu.

Len Garae says the day will be filled with sports and dancing.

"Celebrations throughout the country and here in the capital [Port Vila] they have de-centralised the communities to make sure that celebrations were organised with sports activities and speeches and joy and dancing."
