Tonga gears up for Friday's coronation week highlight

7:16 pm on 31 July 2008

Royalty from around the world and regional political leaders have been arriving in Tonga for tomorrow's coronation of King George Tupou V.

About 1,400 dignitaries will be attending the event, including the Japanese Crown Prince Naruhito, Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of Thailand, Britain's Duke and Duchess of Gloucester and leaders from around the Pacific.

Tomorrow's celebration is the culmination of a week of events which saw the king officially annointed in an ancient Tongan ceremony on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark has announced that New Zealand's coronation gift will be an annual Fellowship programme for developing Tongan leaders.

The Fellowship is based on a similar programme New Zealand has with Samoa, and is estimated to be worth 9,000 US dollars a year.
