French Polynesia lowers vale added tax by one percent

French Polynesia's consumer organisation, Te Tia Ara, has welcomed an assembly decision to lower the value added tax on some products by one percent.

The drop will only apply to some goods from next month and see the tax rate fall from six to five percent.

Te Tia Ara says the drop may offer a slight relief but adds that there is no guarantee that businesses won't increase prices.

It notes that the other value added tax rates of up to 16 percent remain unchanged.
