Vanuatu's Electoral Office has received more than 300 application forms from candidates vying to contest the general election on September the 2nd.

The Daily Post newspaper quotes the Principal Electoral Officer, Martine Tete, as confirming they have received over 200 applications in Port Vila alone.

Mr Tete says the number of candidates would be considerably higher but many didn't pay the mandatory fee with their application.

With a candidature fee at about 1,000 US dollars, the Electoral Office is set to collect more than 300,000 US dollars.

The final declaration of eligible candidates is due early this week.
