The Solomon Islands Prime Minister Dr Derek Sikua says New Zealand's Recognised Seasonal Employer scheme is already producing economic benefits in his country.

He has expressed gratitude that the New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark has extended the scheme to allow the Solomons to be one of the now countries given priority status when employers choose their short term labour force.

Miss Clark says the RSE is now the second biggest earner of foreign income for Vanuatu and she says this extension gives the Solomons a similar opportunity.

Dr Sikua says it will make a difference.

"Even with the 240 workers who have joined this season, the ermittances are beginning to feature in our Central Bank reports so I think it's going to make a very big difference to our economy."
