Push to increase use of Chamorro language in Northern Marianas

6:26 am on 25 August 2008

Parents in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariannas have been urged to speak the native Chamorro language at home.

The Department of Community and Cultural Affairs on Rota is conducting programmes to promote the Chamorro and Carolinian languages especially to the younger generation.

Rota Resident Director, Lourdes Manglona, says a decrease in use of the Chamarro language means loss of the native people's identity as Chamorros.

Ms Manglona is happy that parents on Rota continue to teach their children the native language at home.

The Aging Office director and an advocate for cultural preservation and enhancement, Howard Macaranas, says youth should be taught how to appreciate the Chamorro language.

He has observed that not all children can speak Chamorro.

At the end of next month, the 3rd Annual Chamorro Conference will be held on Saipan, an event that aims to preserve the Chamorro language and culture.
