The MP for Central Guadalcanal in Solomon Islands Peter Shannel has lost his parliamentary seat after being sentenced to a nine month prison term.

The Magistrates Court in Honiara has found Shannel guilty of carrying a dangerous weapon in a restricted area.

In Solomon Islands any MP facing a prison sentence of longer than six months automatically loses his seat.

Shanel was taken off to prison amid emotional scenes outside the court where his wife and other relatives became angry and started causing a disturbance.

Magistrate security officers had to forcibly move his relatives and supporters from the compound .
